Bad breath is common when you have braces, but it doesn’t have to be for you. Fortunately, there are things you can do regularly to avoid bad breath. To help you, Dr. Rick G. Friedrichs and our orthodontic team would like to share those tips with you!

First, clean your smile as much as possible. It’s best to brush and floss your teeth after you eat throughout the day. Getting food stuck in your braces is common, and when this happens, the food can create bad breath. But, when you wash the food away from your teeth and braces, you can eliminate your bad breath! You can achieve an even fresher breath by rinsing with mouthwash.

Second, clean your tongue regularly. You can do so with a toothbrush or tongue scraper. This can help you eliminate the smelly bacteria from your tongue and give you the fresh breath you’re looking for.

Third, visit your dentist twice a year for a professional dental cleaning. These appointments are vital for your oral health. They can help you clean away the stubborn plaque and food particles that attach to the braces hardware and promote bad breath.
