If you have a smaller cavity in a tooth that is visible to other people, you may want to talk to Dr. Rick G. Friedrichs about a composite dental filling. Composite fillings have become very popular in recent years, since the composite can be shaded to match the rest of your tooth, making it virtually unnoticeable to others. Composite fillings also have the advantage of bonding to the surface of your tooth and fitting very well into the opening made by your dentist.

Composite fillings are a combination of an acrylic resin and powdered glass. Typically a composite filling will last for five years. Although advances in dental medicine are resulting in stronger composites, they are still not as strong as metal fillings. For that reason, they are usually used for smaller cavities in teeth that will not received a great deal of pressure when you bite or chew. Composite fillings also take longer to place on a patient’s tooth. The tooth must be kept clean and dry, and the filling is placed in layers. Each layer is cured with a special light.

To maintain the integrity and color of the filling, you need to continue to brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss before bed, and see your dentist for your routine appointments. Your fillings can be stained, so limit or avoid dark colored foods and beverages.
